Coronavirus cases surge by 75 in Australia's hot spot state Victoria

It is also the fourth-biggest since the pandemic hit the country.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton blamed the latest outbreak on people failing to quarantine when sick - and said suburb lockdowns were being considered.

"I think it will get worse before it gets better", he said.

Queensland again recorded zero new cases and with just two active cases is likely days away from declaring itself Covid-free.

Fourteen were linked to known outbreaks and 37 were reportedly picked up through testing of ten "hotspot" Melbourne suburbs.

Twenty-three of the cases are still being investigated as the state suffers a second wave of the deadly virus which has infected 10million around the world.

Jenny Mikados, Health Minister, said that most of the new infections were spread at family gatherings.

He said any possible lockdowns on certain suburbs - something the state's premier has indicated could happen- are a "balancing act".

"We have seven states and territories at the moment in Australia, where there is either no or virtually no community transmission ... and what that means is resources that are available in other states can also be deployed to assist", the prime minister said.

"What we're seeing in Victoria is exactly what was planned when we have outbreaks occurring across the country", Kidd said.

Professor Sutton also spoke about new lockdown orders. "But it is absolutely an option and we flagged the possibility of using it and we will use it if it is required".

He explained that any new rules would focus on limiting the number of people that residents can interact with.

"We know that it is a real challenge for businesses, it is a real challenge for people in their homes if that is what is required".

In Australia around a third of the new patients are in their 20s and 30s.

For the past 12 days, Victoria has recorded double-digit increases in coronavirus infections.

In total, there have been 501 thousand reported deaths due to coronavirus in Australia.

"We also have three new cases that are security contractors who were already in quarantine from the Stamford Plaza, so they have undertaken their day 11 tests as is standard practice where we have an outbreak, so those people are already in quarantine as part of that, that brings that total to 23".
