Carl Reiner death: Rob Reiner, more celebrities pay tribute

Reiner attends a special screening of the feature-length documentary Method To The Madness Of Jerry Lewis in 2011

He got his start by appearing in several Broadway musicals, including "Inside U.S.A." and "Alive and Kicking" before securing the lead role in "Call Me Mister".

Additionally, Reiner would direct many episodes of The New Dick Van Dyke Show, and in 2004, he'd appear in the reunion special The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited alongside Van Dyke.

His son Rob Reiner went on to become a successful Hollywood film director, known for The Princess Bride (1987) and A Few Good Men (1992).

The Dick Van Dyke Show creator and TV legend Carl Reiner has died at 98.

In 2018, at age 96, Reiner became the oldest Emmy nominee in history for his narration of the HBO documentary "If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast".

Victor of nine Emmy Awards, Reiner earned five for The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961-66, and on which he played television host Alan Brady.

Reiner, father of filmmaker and activist Rob Reiner, continued to stay in the public eye into his 80s and 90s with roles in Oceans Eleven, Family Guy and American Dad. "He was my guiding light". After joining the service's performing unit, Reiner broke into showbiz after hostilities finished, landing a spot on Your Show of Shows in 1950, where he would collaborate with the likes of Brooks and Neil Simon.

A prolific entertainer, Reiner is best known as the creator of "The Dick Van Dyke Show", which he starred on with Van Dyke and Marty Tyler Moore. Reiner drew a splendidly over-the-top performance from Anne Bancroft, Mel Brooks's wife, as a fading star. Originally a starring vehicle for himself titled "Head of the Family", the show was retooled with Reiner instead taking on the role of egotistical TV host Alan Brady, a role he later reprised in 1995 on an episode of Mad About You.

Reiner wrote four volumes of memoirs, including I Just Remembered in 2014, as well as children's books. It launched a short but fruitful partnership with Martin, whom he directed in three other films including Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983), and All of Me (1984).

Starting in 2001, he made a big-screen comeback playing elder con artist Saul Bloom, who comes out of retirement to join George Clooney, Brad Pitt and others in the blockbuster remake of the 1960s heist film Ocean's Eleven. Reiner has also appeared in many famous television shows over the decades, including Night Gallery, Frasier, The Bernie Mac Show, Hot in Cleveland, and Two and a Half Men.
