Tsai says China must 'coexist' with a democratic Taiwan

Pompeo Slams WHO For Failing to Include Taiwan In Coronavirus Conference

The Chinese Communist Party responded with "strong indignation and condemnation" and threatened "necessary counter-measures".

Beijing has proposed the idea of using this model to govern Taiwan, as it views the self-ruled island as its territory, despite the fact that Taiwan has its own military, currency, and democratically-elected officials.

The Communist Party's Global Times newspaper struck an even more confrontational tone in a commentary on Wednesday, denouncing Mr Pompeo's statement, warning that China now has the strength to "overwhelm the Taiwan military and deter the United States military".

Meanwhile, 76.6 percent said Beijing was unfriendly toward the Taiwanese government, and 61.5 percent said Beijing was unfriendly toward Taiwanese people-both of which were all record highs in the past 15 years.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow said, "Under President Tsai's leadership, Belize and Taiwan will remain the firmest of friends".

In recent weeks, the USA has pushed for Taiwan's inclusion as an observer to the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which has faced questions over its handling of the pandemic.

It was recently blocked from taking part in a virtual meeting of the World Health Assembly (WHA)-the WHO's decision-making body-which commenced on May 18.

Tsai renewed her offer of talks with Beijing. "I know that no matter the challenges we may face, we will stand together in freedom, democracy, and solidarity", she said.

Washington diplomatically recognises Beijing but remains a major ally for Taiwan and is bound by Congress to provide arms sales to ensure its defence.

"However, since Taiwan's formal and informal communication channels with China have been suspended for years, Taiwan's situation is also very risky when there is no trust between the USA and China, as it is very easy to misjudge the situation in cross-strait affairs".

Elizabeth Economy, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said that Taiwan always enjoyed broad support in Washington but that previous administrations anxious about undermining the "precarious balance" between China, Taiwan and the United States.

"We will continue these efforts, and we are willing to engage in dialogue with China and make more concrete contributions to regional security", she said, speaking in the garden of the old Japanese governor's house in Taipei, in front of a physicall distanced audience of officials and diplomats.

Mr Pompeo referred to Taiwan as a "force for good in the world and a reliable partner", sentiments echoed in statements by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and several United States members of congress.

Tsai renewed her offer of talks with Beijing and called on President Xi Jinping to work with her to lower tensions. Beijing must find a way to live peacefully alongside a democratic Taiwan that will never accept Chinese rule, President Tsai Ing-wen said May 20 in an inauguration speech that also celebrated the island's successful fight against the coronavirus. Taiwan was an observer until 2016, but ties with China have worsened since Ms. Tsai's coming to power.

China has increasingly policed actions by governments, companies and even celebrities that could be seen bestowing formal status on Taiwan's government.

"China is becoming more powerful, and our ability to claim sovereignty over Taiwan is certainly growing", the Global Times said.

He explained: "We should increase the number of both naval operations and air operations through the Taiwan Strait".
