Former FBI director James Comey pushed the White House to investigate Michael Flynn over his contacts with Russian officials despite a lack of any evidence of any wrongdoing, a recently declassified email sent by former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice to herself reveals.

Rice informed PBS she is "humbled and honored" to be on a listing of token ladies Joe Biden has insisted he should select as his Vice President, and "certainly would say yes" if requested.

"The president stressed that he is not asking about, initiating or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective".

The FBI, not the National Security Agency which has its own network of high-tech eavesdropping techniques, that scooped up Flynn, former officials told the paper.

In the newly revealed portion of the email, Rice said then-FBI Director James Comey told President Barack Obama that he was doing things "by the book".

"That email looks like it's written to cover the whole upper level of the administration", said former Trump DOJ Official Ian Prior, who maintains the Rice email was likely the result of discussions between Rice and senior White House officials, rather than at the direction of the White House Counsel's Office.

Sens. Grassley and Johnson say the administration's deep-state surveillance operation on the Trump campaign involved unmasking even more USA citizens tied to the campaign that preceded the official launch of Crossfire Hurricane.

"If I were writing myself an email where three times I had to say I did everything 'by the book, ' that is certainly more incriminating than it is exculpatory", a sarcastic Gaetz added.

Warner also asked Grenell to "declassify and make publicly available any intelligence report concerning conversations" between Flynn and former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Details from the email about Obama's comments during that meeting had already been made public. He went on to suggest that the administration might not want to share sensitive information on Russian Federation with Flynn, though Pelton says Rice did not change the way she briefed Flynn as a result. But Comey's remarks had been classified until this week. "That email proves that Rice lied about her knowledge of surveillance of incoming Trump administration officials".

I know nothing about this.

Former U.S. national security adviser Michael Flynn passes by members of the media as he departs after his sentencing was delayed at U.S. District Court in Washington, U.S., December 18, 2018. "They pulled the pin on the grenade, threw it and this email is them hiding behind the sandbags".

Trump allies ever since have been pressing to know who leaked information about the call.

"The American people deserve the full transcripts so they can judge for themselves Michael Flynn's conduct", a spokeswoman for Rice said in a statement Tuesday.

A former senior intelligence official said Federal Bureau of Investigation reports based on FISA collection, unlike reports from the National Security Agency, generally do not "mask" the names of Americans because the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a domestic law enforcement agency and the conduct of Americans is part of its purview.
