National Basketball Association teams expecting guidelines around June 1 for players' return

Orlando Magic v Charlotte Bobcats Game 4

The league is set to issue protocols around June 1 regarding the return of out-of-town players to teams, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The NBA has apparently zeroed in on a host site should a return to play occur this season, as sources told Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic that Orlando/Disney World has emerged as the clear front-runner. Orlando has moved ahead of Las Vegas as the top neutral-site candidate.

There is growing optimism regarding a potential return to the 2019-20 National Basketball Association season after it was suspended in early March due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to ESPN, Silver and owners reached agreement on the preference of a "campus environment" for the health and safety of the players and teams, as well as the general public. The same approximate time frame is when clubs are expected to be able to boost training from the current socially distanced structure.

ESPN reports the NBA's step-by-step plan includes an initial two-week recall of players into team marketplaces for a period of quarantine, one-to-two weeks of individual workouts at team facilities and a two- to three-week formal training camp.

It sounds as if Wojnarowski and Lowe are hearing a similar timeline suggested - sources tell ESPN that many team owners, executives, and NBPA higher-ups believe commissioner Adam Silver will green-light a return to play in June, with games resuming before the end of July. Although many players have stayed close to team headquarters amid the ongoing pandemic, there are a handful of notable names that have returned home either out of the state, or even the country in Luka Doncic's case. "We're going to put our family on hold'".

The league will not contain players to the resort exclusively, but presumably players will be less likely to need to leave, given all the amenities in place within Disney World.
