Long Island man killed by son while others watched on Zoom call

Police officers are seen outside the scene of a fatal stabbing in Amityville New York

According to police, Dwight Powers, 72, was participating in a Zoom video chat with multiple people around 12 p.m. from his Amityville home on Dixon Avenue, when he was stabbed by his 32-year-old son, Thomas Scully-Powers. "They were all concerned about their friend".

He was held within an hour after chat guests had called the police.

Witnesses recalled hearing Powers' heavy breathing over the call.

A report by Newsday said that there had been about 20 other people on the video call, which the police confirmed later Thursday night.

Chat members saw Powers slump over and his naked son in the background, authorities said.

Once they figured out the victim's name and address, they called 911. He faces a charge of second-degree murder, Suffolk County police said.

Scully-Powers fled the scene and was taken into custody a short time later, after which he was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries which he sustained while jumping out of a window.

Suffolk Police said details on his arraignment and detention would be available once Scully-Powers is released from the hospital.

An unnamed witness told WABC that people watched as Scully-Powers stripped the sheets from a bed and laid them on the ground, as if to cover something.

Scully-Powers is due back in court on May 26, and until then is detained without bail.
