Joe Biden to address Maine Democrats at virtual rally

Joe Biden says he hopes to appoint the presidential vice president around August 1

"Amy Klobuchar is an absolute no-go", said Keith Williams, chairman of the Democratic Party Black Caucus in MI, a battleground state Biden hopes to win back after Trump's 2016 victory there. California Senator Kamala Harris, former minority leader in the Georgia State House Stacey Abrams and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada are also potential contenders.

At Wednesday's fundraiser, which he hosted with former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, Biden said his four-person review committee is about to "decide on the basic cut".

Other likely contenders for the position include Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., speaks to union members during an International Union of Painters and Allied Trades convention at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019.

The officer charged on Friday with killing Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was involved in a fatal shooting in 2006, when Klobuchar was county attorney.

The Democratic lawmaker, who is now in her home state, which is being rocked by violent protests following Floyd's death, said allegations against her were a "bold-faced lie". I spent the day with my community, which was the right thing to do.

Newsweek reached out to the Biden campaign for comment.

Biden faced a barrage of criticism last week for saying on a black radio show that anyone who can't choose between him and Trump "ain't black".

"We wish Joe Biden and Texas Democrats the best of luck in attaining their decades long pipe dream of turning Texas blue", said Samantha Cotten, a campaign spokeswoman.

Cortez Masto, who in 2016 became the first Latina elected to the U.S. Senate, said in a statement that she supports the former vice president and will work tirelessly to get him elected but does not want to join the presidential ticket.
