Jamie Carragher identifies the player Arsenal 'are really excited about'

David Luiz set to leave Arsenal after just one season with his contract up next month

It had been reported by a section of the United Kingdom tabloids that the player had signed a two-year deal when he arrived but Sky has revealed that the initial agreement was just on a 12 months deal.

Saliba could just be the reason why Arsenal chose to give David Luiz just a one year deal as they predicted that they would be getting a younger centre back that has potential to be one of the best in the league after 12 months.

According to journalist James Benge, Arsenal have a one year option to extend his deal which they are yet to activate.

Premier League club Arsenal could free player David Luiz as talks about his contract extension have not yet taken place.

Mikel Arteta has repeatedly sung Luiz's praises since replacing Unai Emery as head coach in December and is understood to be desperate to keep him, as is the Gunners' technical director Edu.

Arsenal signed Luiz from Chelsea back in August, beating the deadline to bring the Brazilian across London in a shock move.

Speaking out on the reports that the former Chelsea star could leave, ex-Arsenal striker Hartson has hammered those that have labelled Luiz a "liability", suggesting Arteta should keep him and mould him into a holding midfielder.

It was then claimed that Luiz signed a two-year deal.

He spent four years with the club from 2007-2011 and recently expressed his desire to return.

Luiz's current deal expires at the end of June but the club have the provision to negotiate a short-term renewal after the Premier League sides unanimously agreed that the expiring contracts of players can be extended until when the season ends. "In football everything changes, what is true today, tomorrow is a lie, but my feeling is not", he told the club website.

"I love Benfica. My dream is to step on the pitch of Estadio da Luz in their colours".
