Facebook Shifting to Permanent Work-From-Home Status for Many Employees

Zuckerberg sounded pretty sure in an interview with the BBC that the upcoming U.S. election will see attempts at interference, but said his company has learned a lot over the past four years, after an alleged army of Russian trolls was suspected of coordinated action on Facebook against Democratic Party candidate Hilary Clinton. "But I think that it's possible that over the next five to 10 years - maybe closer to 10 than five, but somewhere in that range - I think we could get to about half of the company working remotely permanently".

He predicted some cost savings related to real estate, food and labor costs, as sky-high compensation packages common in Silicon Valley will be adjusted if Facebook employees opt to live in less-pricey regions.

"Earlier today, we announced the extension of our work-from-home arrangement for all Spotify employees globally".

Facebook, which has already said it will stick to plans to hire 10,000 engineers and product employees this year, will also build three new "hubs" in Atlanta, Dallas and Denver where remote workers in those areas could occasionally meet.

The decision comes just hours after Spotify told its employees they can work remotely through the end of the year.

Facebook is also looking into supporting permanent remote work for its existing employees.

"I think the best people, you're going to have to pay them regardless of where they live or you're going to lose them to a competitor", he said.

Zuckerberg said that in a company survey, of the people who said they would want to work remotely full time, about 45% were "pretty confident" that they would move to another place if they had that opportunity, with an additional 30% saying they "might" move. "That's not really the approach", Zuckerberg explained.

Shopify boss Lütke tweeted: "As of today, Shopify is digital by default".

After publishing its most recent earnings at the beginning of May, Shopify became the most valuable public company in Canada.

Meanwhile, Swedish music streaming platform Spotify informed employees in all territories that they can work from home until next year if they wish to do so.

In an attempt to stop misinformation trolls, at the end of 2019 Facebook removed multiple accounts from its platform, including "50 Instagram accounts and one account on Facebook that originated in Russian Federation and focused primarily on the US". "We will continue to track local government guidelines city-by-city and take a phased approach of opening our offices when we deem it safe to do so", A Spotify rep told TheWrap.
