Coronavirus: UK deaths pass 47000 today

The ONS numbers published today report that there had been a total of 42,173 coronavirus deaths in England and Wales by May 15th - the organisation has a ten-day delay in producing its Covid-19 figures.

There were 382 Covid-19 deaths in the West Midlands over the same period.

Since the coronavirus lockdown began there have been 53,960 "excess deaths" in England and Wales, meaning all of those people died on top of the number that would be expected in a normal year.

The figures also show 55 of the new deaths took place between May 15 and May 23, nine took place in April and the remaining three occurred in March with the earliest on March 21.

This was 1,916 deaths more than the previous week but 3,380 lower than two weeks before.

The ONS said next week's figures will be a better representation of any trend, as it will not include bank holidays.

In Northern Ireland, the number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus has risen to 516 after two more deaths were reported by the Department of Health. We are also told that some of these people did not die OF Covid-19, but were displaying the symptoms at their time of death.

By the same date, PHW had reported 1,207 deaths - 800 fewer than those eventually registered and recorded by ONS.

This is 137 more deaths than the five-year average.

It shows this morning that in the week ending May 15, a total of 84 people in Powys had died with Covid-19 mentioned on their death certificates.

Together these figures mean that so far 46,383 deaths have been registered in the United Kingdom where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, including suspected cases.

Nearly a third - 31 per cent - of deaths registered in the North West that week mentioned coronavirus - the first time since the week ending March 13 that London has not had the highest proportion.
