Aldon Smith reinstated by NFL

NFL reinstates Cowboys ‘ Aldon Smith, who last played in ’15 | Miami Herald

Smith will be able to take part in meetings with Cowboys coaches and teammates in the virtual offseason program beginning Tuesday.

Chris Simms of NBC Sports was the one who reported Prescott's refusal of the 5-year, $175 million deal as well as him wanting $45 million in the final year of his deal.

Smith has been on an odyssey to get his life back in order since 2015. A week after signing with the Cowboys, Smith sat down with Jay Glazer of FOX Sports and talked about his journey. Smith having that familiarity with a coach, especially one that helped guide him to 33.5 sacks in his first two years, will be another brick to a solid foundation for him going forward.

The seventh overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft, Smith ranked second in the NFL with 19.5 sacks with the San Francisco 49ers in 2012. There are also major statistical performance benchmarks, maxing out at $2 million if he reaches 14 sacks.

The Cowboys, known under owner/general manager Jerry Jones to take chances on players with character concerns, gave Smith a contract last month with no guaranteed money but loaded with incentives that could garner him up to $4 million. He made a connection with new Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy a year ago at a Los Angeles gym where he was working out, and he had his best two seasons with the Niners under current Cowboys defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, including a 19.5-sack season in 2012, when he was named an All-Pro. DeMarcus Lawrence is the Cowboys' best pass-rusher, but he had just five sacks in 2019.

The then-Oakland Raiders signed Smith to a one-year contract in September 2015, but nine games into that season, the league handed down its one-year ban. ESPN's Todd Archer reports that Randy Gregory "remains in the return process" from his suspension.

"We are very happy for Alden and wish him all the luck in the world and a successful resumption of his career", Schaffer said.

In 43 games played from 2011-13, he had 42 sacks - second most in the National Football League in that span.

Smith had his first off-the-field incident in 2013, when he was arrested on suspicion of DUI after crashing his truck into a tree in a residential neighborhood in San Jose, California.

However, following a series of arrests and off-field issues, as well as multiple team and league suspensions, Smith was suspended for one year by the NFL in November 2015, and he has not played in the league since.
