Coronavirus second wave: China reports new 1,541 asymptomatic cases as trend reverses

The move to disclose the number of asymptomatic cases comes amid scrutiny of China's reported figures, which previously only included people who exhibited symptoms.

Donald Trump has said China's reported death toll and infections from the coronavirus seem "a little bit on the light side", as USA lawmakers and members of the intelligence community accused Beijing of intentionally under reporting the scale of the outbreak.

So far, according to a Johns Hopkins University of Medicine world tracker of the virus' impact, there are more than 190,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US and more than 4,000 people have died.

The decline of coronavirus cases even in its epicentres in Hubei province and its capital Wuhan prompted China to relax its lockdown permitting people to travel out.

"The medical community made - interpreted the Chinese data as: This was serious, but smaller than anyone expected", she said at a news conference on Tuesday.

The classified report, first reported by Bloomberg citing three unnamed USA officials, was submitted to the White House last week, according to the outlet.

The United States does not now have more coronavirus-related deaths than China, despite media claims, according to a senator on the Select Committee on Intelligence.

Ben Sasse charged China with reporting false figures related to the Wuhan coronavirus Wednesday as reports emerge from the East Asian giant that the epidemic appears to be subsiding while cases surge in the United States.

The commission did not say if any of the new cases were asymptomatic but on Tuesday reported that, of a total of 1,541 asymptomatic cases now being isolated and monitored for symptoms, 205 had come from overseas. The Chinese government has repeatedly revised its methodology for counting cases and for weeks excluded people without symptoms entirely.

By comparison, the US has more than 216,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

He noted that some of China's numbers on Covid-19 cases seem a bit "low", but he insisted his relationship with President Xi remained "really good".

Deborah Birx, the State Department immunologist advising the White House on its response to COVID-19, said Tuesday that China's numbers influenced assumptions in other countries about the nature of the contagion.

However, controversy around Beijing's transparency has strained ties, adding to bad feelings triggered by a conspiracy theory in China that the USA military was to blame for the virus.

Many on social media said they were terrified of the high number of asymptomatic carriers, and some called for health officials to break down the data by province.

The total number of imported cases has risen to 806, it said. Both Italy and Spain have reported more deaths than China and the U.S. is now projecting as many as 240,000 deaths.

Republican lawmakers this week called for an investigation into a possible coverup by China, as well as the disappearance of three citizen journalists, Fang Bin, Chen Qiushi and Li Zehua, who went missing after reporting from Wuhan. The first two struggled to get information from local health officials, especially about whether the virus was being transmitted from person to person, Yang said. The development of medical therapies and public-health measures to combat the virus "so that we can save lives depends on the ability to have confidence and information about what has actually transpired", Pompeo said.
