Wash your hands after stroking your pets, French experts warn

It is a good idea to wash your hands after handling pets

Even though there is no evidence yet that domestic animals can transmit the virus to humans or get sick from it, there could be a potential risk, said the French Academy of Medicine, which advises the government on epidemics and has set up a dedicated COVID-19 monitoring group. While no pets have been sick with the virus, there has been a "weak positive" test on an animal who belonged to an infected person.

During this pandemic, however, many Canadians will find themselves at home with their furry best pal. Indeed, it serves as an excellent reminder to pull that plan together now if you don't have one already.

According to the BCCDC, anyone who is infected with COVID-19 should limit contact with their pet during their illness.

"However, because all animals can carry germs that can make people sick, it's always a good idea to practice healthy habits around pets and other animals", the Center continued, reminding Americans to wash their hands. "To date, there is no evidence that companion animals can spread the disease". With this in mind, you must pratice safe social distancing in parks, and follow city bylaws.

But it noted that there is nothing to suggest so far that dogs can infect humans or other animals.

"There's one dog in Hong Kong that has tested positive", said Beth Nguyen, DMV, of Woodburn Pet Hospital.

In an article regarding animals and vaccinations, the East Bay SPCA warned that having your dog vaccinated against Coronavirus will not prevent Covid-19.

"Veterinary care is an essential part of our community and we want to assure you that our hospital is open and will continue to provide services at this time", said Daryl Verbeek, president of VCA Canada Animal Hospitals.

What other precautions should dog owners take?

In case you have to self-quarantine, you should prepare an emergency kit that includes a 30-day supply of your pets' medications, as well as at least two weeks' worth of food.

If a pet is suspected to have been exposed to an infected person, bathing the pet should resolve any concerns about them carrying virus on their fur.

Courtesy of Dr. Gary Richter a veterinarian on Rover's Dog People Panel and author of "The Ultimate Pet Health Guide", these are some frequently asked questions about pets and the coronavirus.

Goldstein said they've also received a lot of inquiries.

"Petting a dog releases oxytocin, and that in itself promotes a sense of bonding, love, happiness, Rendon said". Also, consider making a potty for your dog in the backyard by bordering off an area of the yard. "Many veterinary clinics are now partnered with online pharmacies and pet food companies that will deliver products directly to the client. It may be more on a emergency-type basis rather than business as usual", she said, "but there will be ways that veterinary care will still be available to animals".

Dogs can help you keep a routine and stay active, which is important to your mental and physical health during these trying times. If you can not find someone else to care for your pet, continue providing care yourself, but limit contact with them as much as possible. Do not kiss them or snuggle with them, and wear a face mask around them.

"Pet parents should try and talk to their vet over the phone, as a telemedicine appointment, before scheduling an in-person visit as much as possible", says Dr. Hanie Elfenbein, a veterinarian based in Chattanooga, Tennessee and a veterinary journalist for GreatPetCare.com.

Malaguti said that changes have been made at the hospital in order to protect the animals, staff and owners from contracting COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
