The First Supermoon Of The Year Will Be Visible This Weekend

First Supermoon of 2020 Will Appear This Weekend How to Watch Live Timings

This weekend the first of three super moons of the 2020s will grace the skies, moons that appear just a little larger than a regular full moon.

According to NASA, the moon will be completely full on Sunday, February 9 at 2:33 a.m. ET, but it will appear full all weekend, from approximately Friday night to Monday morning.

A supermoon is popularly known as a full or new moon that coincides with the lunar orbit making an especially close approach to Earth. It's the second full moon of the year, but the first supermoon of 2020, and the decade.

"On the evening of the Full Moon on February 9, as evening twilight ends, the brightest of the planets, Venus, will appear in the west-southwest at about 27 degrees above the horizon".

If possible, one of the best times to see the moon is when it is near the horizon, due to an optical illusion that makes it appear even larger due to its relative size compared to buildings, trees and statues in the distance.

And for star enthusiasts, there are more things to see besides the moon this weekend. This month, it falls on February 10 and the heavenly body itself is traditionally called a "snow moon" on this month.

The term snow moon comes from northeastern Native American tribes who experienced the heaviest snowfall this time of year, according to the Farmer's Almanac.

The next super moon will be the "super worm moon" on Monday, March 9, 2020.

People around the world should be able to see the supermoon on display on 9 February. "Lying roughly in a line with Saturn and Jupiter, the planet Mars will appear to the upper right of Jupiter at about 19 degrees above the horizon".

However, some have a looser definition, saying any full moon that is less than 226,000 miles to our planet can be classified as a supermoon.

This means it appears up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than normal, when viewed from Earth.

For New Yorkers, the moon will rise at 5.46pm and will set at 7.35am on February 20, as per the U.S. Naval Observatory.

According to astrologers, February's Full Moon's has the potential to emotionally elevate you.
