NCAA says Clemson QB can resume coronavirus fundraising

Alabama Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris

The more things change in the world because of the coronavirus pandemic, the more the NCAA stays the same - or at least it seemed that way for a while Tuesday. The Athletic likewise reported that the university's compliance office acted to keep Lawrence from being in violation of NCAA rules.

After The State published its article - and after many people on Twitter responded angrily to the news - the NCAA told Clemson that Lawrence and Mowry's fundraiser can continue and announced that it will allow universities discretion in these instances.

The NCAA will allow Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence to go forward with fundraising efforts to help victims of coronavirus.

In a statement Tuesday evening, the NCAA said it did not ask Lawrence to take down the fundraiser and added, "We continue to work with member schools so they have the flexibility to ensure that student-athletes and communities impacted by this illness are supported, and we applaud Trevor for his efforts".

Lawrence and his girlfriend, Anderson University soccer player Marissa Mowry, started their "COVID-19 Family relief and support" fundraiser on Monday afternoon and raised almost $2,700.

But the mission, launched Monday on social media and a GoFundMe page, set off a chain of events they hadn't foreseen. "So all of that's going to go to Meals on Wheels and No Kid Hungry, which is super awesome", Lawrence said in an additional Instagram video, per The State.

"Unfortunately Trevor cannot be a part of this anymore due to compliance and some rules, so he can't help out anymore", Mowry said in a video on her Instagram page. The NCAA has guidelines in place that bar athletes from using their name, image or likeness to raise money.

"Our intentions were to try and help everyone", Mowry said. "But we're still going to do our best to love on y'all and support one another during this hard time".

Lawrence, who led Clemson to an NCAA championship as a freshman and was an All-ACC first-team selection last season, is widely expected to be the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
