Diplomat from Philippines first known coronavirus case at United Nations in NY

The diplomat, who had visited the United Nations on Monday, showed symptoms of flu the next day and saw a physician.

A Philippine diplomat in NY has tested positive for the brand new coronavirus from the very first recorded instance at United Nations headquarters in town, diplomatic sources said on Thursday.

The next day, she had flu like symptoms and did not go to work, according to the letter. She tested positive for flu and was prescribed Tamiflu.

"As of today, the Philippine Mission is in lockdown, and all personnel are instructed to self quarantine and to seek medical attention should they develop the symptoms", the source noted. "The necessary health and safety protocols have been implemented", DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Menez told reporters. He said the United Nations medical services was contacting those diplomats.

As a result of this development, the Philippine Consulate in NY has suspended all its operations "until further notice".

All transactions at the Consulate are temporarily transferred to the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., which is about three-hour drive from New York City.

The World Health Organization announced Wednesday that coronavirus also known as COVID-19, which has killed over 4,000 people, is officially a pandemic.
