Musician John Prine is in a essential condition in medical institution after a "unexpected onset" of coronavirus symptoms, his family says.

A message posted on Prine's Twitter page Sunday said the "Angel from Montgomery" singer has been hospitalized since Thursday and his condition worsened on Saturday.

"This is hard news for us to share", the statement continued.

The family statement also expresses gratitude to the fans who have "loved and supported John over the years" and asks to send love and support to the Grammy Hall of Fame awardee.

This past November, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys.

Prine is the latest singer to be diagnosed with coronavirus after several other musicians announced their diagnosis. With the help of Kris Kristofferson, he released his first album in 1971. Most recently, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013 and had part of a lung removed.

Prine have survived cancer twice. Prine was born in Maywood, Illinois, on October 10, 1946.
