Canadians targeted by scams taking advantage of COVID-19 fears

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Trump is expected to send fewer than 1,000 troops to the Canadian border, two United States government officials told Reuters. This now collapses the previously announced Emergency Care Benefit and Emergency Support Benefit into one.

The bill allows the federal government up to $52 billion in funds to directly help Canadians, including a repackaged aid program for workers who can't work for nearly any reason connected to the virus.

The final text of the legislation includes several notable changes to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's $82-billion economic aid package announced last week.

"An application portal will launch as quickly as possible, and people should start receiving money within 10 days of applying", Trudeau said.

The prime minister also said he's taking additional measures to prevent a rise in unemployment and poverty in Canada.

"We're going to do whatever it takes", said Trudeau.

When asked about the story during a morning news conference, Trudeau said the Canadian government has "been in discussions" with the United States on the issue.

Asked to explain why Canada made a decision to send these supplies overseas, Trudeau stated that the novel coronavirus is a worldwide pandemic, and a global response is needed.

As part of that trilateral agreement, Canada has also agreed to send so-called "irregular" migrants who cross the border somewhere other than at an official port of entry back to the United States.

For generations, the two countries have shared one of the most open borders in the world, but that could soon change amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Compared to the US, which had seen almost 69,690 confirmed cases of COVID-19 by Thursday afternoon, with 1,049 cases resulting in the death, Canada's numbers appear to be relatively low.

Thursday marks the 15th day since Trudeau began self-isolating on account of his wife Sophie demonstrating COVID-19 symptoms and then shortly after being confirmed to have contracted the virus.

All Canadians who have ceased working, whether they are eligible for employment insurance or not, would be able to receive the benefit.
