Bindi Irwin marries without guests at Australia Zoo amid coronavirus pandemic

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell tie the knot hours before Australia's coronavirus wedding restrictions are enforced

Her brother, Robert, walked her down the aisle - and they paid a special tribute to her father, Steve Irwin, during the ceremony.

And in the comments of Bindi's post, Robert admitted seeing his sister marry Chandler was "one of the most special moments" of his life.

"This is a day that we will never forget", Robert said.

She wrote on Instagram: "We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There's no one more flawless for Bindi and I'm so happy for you both!"

"We want to acknowledge Steve by all of us lighting this candle for him, but you know, I guess in some ways it's not necessary because Steve will be there anyway", she told The Courier Mail.

Irwin and Powell, 22, started dating in 2013 when he was in Australia for a professional wakeboarding competition.

She also noted that plans for her wedding had to be changed quickly due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, prompting people around the world to avoid large gatherings and stay inside their homes if possible. Although it was a "difficult decision", it was important for them to "keep everyone safe".

She continued: "Right now we're encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history".

"Today we celebrated life and revelled in every lovely moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens", Bindi wrote on Instagram, sharing wedding details. Irwin revealed that they had been planning the wedding for almost a year, but changed everything at the last minute because of concerns of coronavirus and wanting their friends and family to stay safe.

"I was beyond honoured to get to walk Bindi down the aisle today", the 16-year-old shared on Instagram after the couple announced their nuptials.

"The most handsome surprise".

The 21-year-old got engaged to her long-time American boyfriend Chandler Powell on her birthday last July.

Bindi and Chandler have always wanted to marry at Australia Zoo. "I never even knew Robert was there photographing and I'll always be grateful to have these special memories of the most wonderful day of my life".

On Tuesday, Bindi shared a sweet throwback photo of herself with her father on social media.
