Apple unveils new iPad Pro: Everything you need to know

Both models come with several upgraded specs including the processor. The so-called Magic Keyboard will be available in May.

Building on the power of the A12X chip, the A12Z Bionic for the iPad Pro 2020 features an 8-core GPU, an enhanced thermal architecture and tuned performance controllers. The Liquid Retina display can achieve an insane 120 Hz refresh - adjustable to conserve battery.

Once again, Apple is promoting its premium tablet line as a replacement for a PC or laptop.

The two new iPad Pro models that have a lidar scanning onboard are the 11 and 12.9-inch models, and are created to enhance 3D photography as well as support developers that are using ARKit for the development of augmented reality (AR) apps. Elsewhere, the combination of a 720p FaceTime camera and three beamforming microphones should help video conferences tick along smoothly, and there's a 3.5-mm headphone jack for cabled cans.

The depth sensing from lidar, combined with the dual depth cameras is getting pushed through sophisticated computer vision algorithms.

The Air's keyboard has been updated too with a scissor switch-based Magic Keyboard that has 1 mm of key travel and an inverted-T layout of the arrow keys. "Today we're giving it a huge update, with two times faster performance, the new Magic Keyboard, double the storage, a new lower price of $999 and an even lower price of $899 for education", said Tom Boger, Apple's senior director of Mac and iPad Product Marketing, in a separate release. The keyboard's trackpad isn't just a re-enactment of the MacOS version. Instead of operating as it does on a MacBook, the trackpad on the iPad appears as a circle that highlights user interface elements, text fields and apps, so you know exactly what you're going to click on. There's a USB-C port, which recharges both the keyboard and the iPad attached to it. The smaller sized keyboard will set buyers apart $299 while the bigger version costs $349. Thankfully, Apple has also increased the base storage of the entry-level model from 128GB to 256GB SSD storage, a capacity that will make it easier for users to store photos and other media locally without resorting to external solutions. That opens from March 19 but when they will be available in stores is not yet known.

As for the prices, the 11-inch iPad Pro with 128GB of storage will sell for $799 (£769, AU1,329, AED 3,199, INR 71,900) for the Wi-Fi model while the same storage size with cellular support is $949 (£919, AU$1,579, AED 3,799, INR 85,900).

Battery life is one area that we're unsure how these models will compare: the 2020 Air should last longer thanks to newer and more efficient processor hardware, unless, of course, you pick the more powerful processor upgrade.
