A New Half-Life Game Is Coming, and It's VR Only

The new game's name indicates that Valve does not consider it to be the long-awaited "Half-Life 3", a sequel whose notable absence has become the basis for a long-running joke.

Thankfully, you won't have to buy a $1000 Valve Index to play Valve's new VR games.

Announced via Valve's Twitter account that no one seemed to know existed until last night, few details have been shared other than a time on Thursday - 10am Pacific Time - and a picture displaying the Valve, SteamVR, and Half-Life logos. Valve has been notorious for not officially adding a "3" to any of their games, and the title "Alyx" to Half-Life isn't exactly ensuring either.

Rumors about a Half-Life VR title have been circulating for a while now.

This piece of news is going to be exciting for video gaming veterans who get sparkly-eyed on any update teased around the Half-Life franchise.

Half-Life: Alyx is rumored to be announced this week, with Valve reportedly set to reveal the VR successor to Half-Life 2. When we used the word flagship, we're generally referring to something considered a leader in its class. Half-Life: Alyx is a piece of software that Valve wants to use to sell VR headsets, so we could well be looking at a fully-featured game built entirely with VR in mind.

Initially, fans thought the game would be released in March 2020, according to WCCFTech. Would it be an appropriate return to the Half-Life series or is this simply another pipe dream? Is that just 'cause you think the opportunity for innovation was sort of in the VR space with this? "Instead of stepping forward in time, HLA will rewind to the period between the first two mainline Half-Life games". Portal 2 (2011) is the most recent singleplayer-focused title from Valve.

Or, Half-Life: Alyx could just be another spin-off for the franchise, bridging some gaps while helping Valve master VR. That same leaked script includes a section where an unnamed Valve developer says "I mean we would love to be delivering a version of this that you could play with a mouse and a keyboard, but like as we said, it began as an exploration of VR". You know what I'm talking about. Find out more information on the official TGA page. According to some of the leaks we saw earlier, this will only be a small teaser followed by a full reveal at The Game Awards in December.
