Former Michigan target throws shade at MSU

Tucker is expected to receive a significant pay increase and a larger salary pool for assistant coaches, according to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman.

In his conversations with MSU officials, Saban is said to have strongly stressed Tucker's recruiting efforts, as well as his ties to the South, which, of course, is a football recruiting hotbed.

"We really began the search, I think, with a very clear vision of what we were looking for in our next head coach", Beekman said.

Tucker went 5-7 in his only year at Colorado. "But this is the right time for me to be here and that's really what it comes down to".

Tucker interviewed with Michigan State's search committee on Saturday in Colorado, but removed his name from consideration.

Apparently, he wanted to get some attention from some of his now-former signees, with the Michigan State Twitter account apparently following Rice.

"I couldn't be more excited about the energy that you're going to bring to this program", President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said. That appears to be when the Spartans re-visited the possibility of hiring Tucker, an OH native and former Big Ten defensive back at Wisconsin. They had 7-6 records the past two seasons and were three games over.500 in the four seasons following their playoff appearance.

Beekman received input from Dantonio and basketball coach Tom Izzo before recommending the school's governing board hire Tucker. Prior to that, he was defensive coordinator at Georgia under Kirby Smart from 2016-18 and defensive backs coach under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2015. He spent three years as the Dawgs defensive coordinator, helping win a Rose Bowl and almost a National Championship. He bounced around from college and the NFL as a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator, winning 2 National Championships with Ohio State and Alabama. He also was the interim head coach for Jacksonville over the final five games in 2011 after Jack Del Rio was sacked. Fickell turned down an offer to become the Spartans' next coach earlier this week, opting to stay at Cincinnati.
