We Know When Android 11 is Available in the Android Beta

Google's Android 11 First Developer Preview is Open Now

Android 10 launched barely six months ago, but Google is already openly preparing for Android 11.

System images for the first Android 11 Developer Preview are out now, and they can be downloaded on the Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, and the Pixel 4. If you want to get in on Android 11 right now, you need to flash a factory image or OTA file.

The reason for the change in process from previous year where all someone had to do was opt in on the beta/dev preview website and then not long after get at OTA notification was to ensure people didn't opt into something accidentally. Thankfully Android 11 seems to have a solution for that. That's based on an early preview of Android 11 revealed by Google today (Feb. 19). To give users more control over their storage and limit app clutter, Google introduced Scoped Storage access in Android 10, which restricts how apps can access the external storage. Android 11 brings a host of new app capabilities, enhancements for foldable phones, APIs to take better advantage of 5G, and newer camera capabilities. This is expected to arrive with Beta 2 in June. We can then see that "Beta Releases" show up as blue dots starting in May and running through to the final release some time in Q3. Do not attempt this if you don't feel comfortable using Recovery Mode and ADB, or having things randomly not work. If you do decide to install it be mindful that this is the very first developer preview and is likely to contain numerous bugs and issues and may not be suitable for day to day use. It goes without saying, of course, that a Developer Preview will be aimed mostly at developers to ensure they have early access to the parts of the OS that they need to make their apps compatible.
