Vikings storylines at the NFL Combine

Why Joe Burrow's NFL Combine hand size isn't a big deal

The players are expected to participate in on-field drills as follows: Quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends Thursday; running backs, offensive linemen and specialists Friday; defensive linemen and linebackers Saturday; and defensive backs Sunday. But we also acknowledge that football is the most important thing we have to get done here. You talk about Cris Carter, he ran a 4.7. It is a bigger event.

Colts owner Jim Irsay isn't going to let it go without a fight, though. We've got you covered. Things only intensified once the trade of Alex Smith from Kansas City to Washington was announced several weeks prior to the Combine.

"I think in today's day and age where these guys were starting 7-on-7, it's nearly like AAU basketball", Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said. For example, when Adrian Peterson's contract ran out in 2017, the Vikings knew that there were a bunch of terrific running back prospects in the '17 draft, including Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, Marlon Mack and Kareem Hunt. "We've talked about it before, so we understand that interest is there".

Nearly all of the roughly 300 players coming through town this week have something to prove.

Others, like Jefferson, want to show teams they can fit into any role. By comparison, 11 cornerbacks were drafted previous year through the first 100 picks. Each has an opportunity to increase their draft stock or see it fall through the floor.

One other note: Rhode Island has never had more than two players drafted in a single year but will have three players in Indy: receivers Isaiah Coulter and Aaron Parker, and offensive lineman Kyle Murphy. Georgia's D'Andre Swift, Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor, LSU's Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Ohio State's J.K. Dobbins are among the top players at the position.

Smith, promoted to vice president of play personnel last month, has had a solid track record of helping the Redskins pick players, finding everything from first-round contributors like Daron Payne, Dwayne Haskins and Montez Sweat to late-round prospects like Cole Holcomb and Jimmy Moreland. And some of the nation's bitterest rivalries will be on display here, too. John Molchon, from Boise State, had 31 1/8-inch arms, Calvin Throckmorton, from OR, had 32 1/1-inch arms, and Ball State's Danny Pinter had 31 7/8-inch arms. Alabama has 10, while Auburn, Notre Dame and Utah each have nine invitees.

Gettleman, who drafted Daniel Jones a year ago and seemingly is not in the market to draft another QB, watched Herbert play at Utah in 2018 but could not recall any specifics.
