Shooting leaves several people dead in western German city of Hanau

Several people have been shot to death in the German city of Hanau, The Associated Press has reported.

Authorities are now looking for the suspects, who are said to have fled the scene.

Citing law enforcement sources, the tabloid Bild said eight people have been killed and five more injured.

It said witnesses reported hearing eight or nine shots and seeing at least one person lying on the ground.

Police said in a statement the first shooting took place around 10pm and a dark vehicle was seen leaving the scene.

Five others were reportedly injured after an unknown attacker opened fire on two shisha bars in the city.

The report said that the perpetrators subsequently drove to the western neighbourhood of Kesselstadt before they started shooting again at another shisha bar.

Another shooting was reported at a second site.
