Senate Approves New War Powers Limits On Iran For President Trump

Donald Trump shakes hands with newly sworn-in White House Chief of Staff John Kelly at the White House

Eight Republicans voted in favor of it: Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Todd Young of Indiana, Mike Lee of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Jerry Moran of Kansas.

The spat began about 10:25 a.m., when the commander-in-chief added Manchin to the list of foes he's targeted since his acquittal by the Senate last week on two articles of impeachment brought by the House.

In response, the White House stated categorically that Trump will veto the bill that emerges from Congress, arguing in effect for unlimited and unilateral presidential powers to wage war. 'If my hands were tied, Iran would have a field day. And at least one other GOP member, Todd Young of IN, said he would support the measure, with other Republicans signaling they would vote yes as well.

Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine led the charge on the resolution, which would ban the president from ordering any new offensive strikes against Iran. "And one can only surmise that the president therefore has something to hide from his own staff and bureaucracy".

"The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to declare war".

Kaine has long pushed for action reasserting congressional power to declare war.

Congress can override the President's veto, . when two-thirds of each House and Senate agree on it, . but that seems unlikely to happen. If the Senate approves the Kaine measure, the House could take up the Senate resolution later this month, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said.

"The United States, frankly, has been involved in too many wars in the last twenty years".

Early on, the legislation garnered three Republican co-sponsors: Sens.

Larry Pfeiffer, a 30-year USA intelligence veteran who managed the Situation Room during the Obama years, said his predecessor told him that the White House had stopped taping presidential calls in the 1970s after Nixon recorded 3,700 hours of conversations. The case was then moved to the Republican majority Senate to determine whether or not to remove Trump from office.

Manchin had also ripped the Senate for voting against calling additional witnesses in the trial, saying that "history will judge the Senate harshly" for failing to "protect our democracy".

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., does a television interview on Capitol Hill in Washington, Dec. 18, 2019.

"The authority to use military force has always been the responsibility of Congress, not one individual".

That's according to four White House officials and Republicans close to the West Wing who were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Trump has also publicly encouraged the Justice Department to punish former FBI officials who were involved in the Russian Federation investigation.

The authors described the scene as an "obviously enthralled president would stare at Priebus as the aide struggled for sufficiently placating answers, all the while trying to gently veer the conversation back to whether we were going to do a troop surge in Afghanistan or strip millions of Americans of healthcare coverage". It includes a loophole rendering meaningless the requirement for congressional authorization for military action against Iran.
