The update came just hours after they reported that Newman was "walking around" the medical center.

Newman, 42, was removed from his No. 6 Ford Mustang and immediately taken to the hospital after his vehicle went airborne on the last lap of the race, then skidded to a stop while on fire.

Newman suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized in Daytona. Newman was transported immediately to Halifax Medical Center after Monday's wreck and has been recovering there since then from his unspecified injuries.

"Ryan Newman continues to show great improvement after Monday night's last-lap accident at Daytona International Speedway", Rousch Fenway Racing said in a statement.

Roush Fenway Racing said earlier in the day that Newman was up and walking around in the hospital. "True to his jovial nature, he has also been joking with staff, friends, and family while spending time playing with his two daughters".

The team included a photo of Newman exiting the hospital, holding hands with his two children. Newman's Ford flipped, was hit by Corey LaJoie's Ford, flew in the air and landed on its top.

The auto landed on its roof, slid across Daytona International Speedway and came to a rest upside down and on fire, with gasoline pouring out of the vehicle. For years, Newman has been critical of NASCAR's airborne crashes on superspeedways, dating back to a 2009 crash at Talladega. The team also has not announced who will drive the No. 6 Ford at Las Vegas this weekend.

Following the terrifying crash, NASCAR and Roush Fenway Racing released a joint statement concerning the status of Ryan's condition at the time.
