Rainfall warning issued for country with flooding expected

Storm Dennis to hit West Berkshire

Affecting all 26 counties in the republic, the national meteorological office warns that spells of heavy, locally thundery rain on Saturday will lead to some flooding.

A further yellow-level rain and wind warning will follow tomorrow for south to south easterly winds of up to 60mph on coasts and high ground across southern Scotland, the Central Belt and Argyll.

It said it was making "all necessary preparations" for the forecast conditions.

Much of the country is set to be buffeted by gusts of around 50mph, although coastal regions may experience heavier winds.

Heavy, persistent rain on Saturday and Sunday is likely to bring significant river and surface water flooding to parts of England over the weekend.

Dennis is the second named storm to hit Galway this week, and the fourth of the season so far before we're even out of February.

"We are as prepared as we can be for whatever the weather brings, and ready to work alongside the emergency services, district councils, other authorities, and our communities again to mitigate any impacts as a result of Storm Dennis".

An easyJet spokesperson said: "We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the disruption for our customers and to arrange alternative travel".

It said Network Rail may need to put speed restrictions in place to keep passengers safe.

Mr Curtin said temporary flood defences were being deployed in many places but added it was too early to tell exactly where the most intense rain would fall.

The Met Office has amber warnings for rain in pockets of northern and south-west England, and Wales from 12:00 GMT on Saturday until 15:00 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann also issued a weather advisory for Ireland ahead of Storm Dennis which is expected to bring flooding and gusty winds that could possibly cause disruption.
