Protests in Solidarity with Wet'suwet'en Continue, Hit Corner Brook Today

Several rail and road blockades have sprung up across the country this week in support of a protest against the Coastal Gas pipeline in northern British Columbia.

Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs oppose a pipeline through their territories in northwestern B.C., and their supporters on the Lower Mainland blocked the tracks just east of Vancouver late yesterday and remained in place through the night.

VIA announced the closure Thursday as blockades continue to spread to tracks across the country.

Blockades set up by anti-pipeline protesters have forced Via Rail to shut down all of its passenger train services across Canada.

A major Canadian rail company is shutting down trans-continental train services amid blockades protesting a pipeline in British Columbia.

He said while Via service will be discontinued across CN's network, commuter rail services such as Metrolinx and Exo can keep operating as long as they do so safely.

The Mohawk Nation said its members have agreed to meet with federal Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller on Saturday morning at a blockade on Tyendinaga Mohawk territory near Belleville, Ont., which is now in its ninth day.

Asked at a news conference whether Justin Trudeau should get involved, Kenney would only say, "That's for the prime minister to decide".

February 12 - The Manitoba government says it may seek a court injunction to end a blockade on a rail line west of Winnipeg, but CN obtains its own court order.

And while frustrations remain high for many who are anxious about the impact on upcoming travel plans, many Canadians are standing in solidarity with the First Nations land protectors who have created the blockades and subsequent cancellations. "I think Canadians are losing patience with this".

"These blockades are illegal", he said.

Garneau, who was meeting his provincial and territorial counterparts, as well as representatives of national Indigenous organizations, stressed that he hopes there will be peaceful resolutions to the blockade disputes.

"It's nice that we have more than one mode of transportation to get back that we're not just relying on the train", she said.

However, he said he's hopeful that Canada's two Indigenous ministers are planning meetings with affected chiefs and protesters in B.C. and Ontario.

"Some companies are now in a position that they can't guarantee delivery dates to customers - a massive business risk and a dark cloud over Canada's reputation as a reliable trading partner", said Derek Nighbor, president and CEO of Forest Products Association of Canada.

Canada's forest products sector is responsible for 10 per cent of total tonnage moved along the country's railway lines.

Trudeau said his government was completely seized with the issue, but said it was up to police on the ground to decide how to enforce the law.

"This is becoming a very serious threat to the entire Canadian economy", Kenney said.
