NBC Los Angeles: CDC Confirms Second Coronavirus Case in San Diego County

US health official hopeful some evacuees may be released from quarantine today

Both that patient and the briefly released evacuee "are doing well and have minimal symptoms", UC San Diego Health said. All 7 were travelers of the very first discharge trip from China to land in San Diego.

The officials received a text as they approached the base that said it was an important message, Braden said, indicating how close the infected woman was to mixing with other evacuees.

The bottom line: 11 of the US cases were travel-related at the epicenter of the illness. The second flight carried 65 people to the base.

The woman was mistakenly released from isolation and taken back to MCAS Miramar due to a mislabeled sample.

"The individual is now isolated and receiving medical care at a designated hospital nearby", the CDC said.

'It isn't that someone else was falsely identified as positive, it was that [the test] wasn't initially run, ' she said.

This is the second person at this base who has tested positive for the virus, officials said.

In this case, the normal procedures for matching a person to a specimen the procedures didn't work properly.

"The number of deaths in China's central Hubei province from a coronavirus outbreak rose by 254 to 1322 as of Thursday, the province's health commission said on its website on Thursday".

'The mishap was unfortunate but it was corrected from happening again in the future by adding additional quality control'.

The two patients "arrived on different planes and were housed in separate facilities; there are no epidemiologic links between them", a CDC statement said.

'We're looking into what's wrong. We think that the issue at the stage, can be explained by one reagent that isn't performing as it should, consistently, ' she said, referring to one the substances used in the kit. "They didn't match exactly".

"The patient did not interact with the environment after leaving the hospital room", Galindo said.

The patient was one of hundreds flown back to the United States from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of a now-global outbreak that has taken more than 1,000 lives.

The newest case is a patient who was placed under federal quarantine after returning from Wuhan, China.

The last case, announced on February 11, 2020 by the CDC, was in a person in California who was previously under federal quarantine because the patient had traveled to Wuhan, China. The first group of evacuees is set to return home Tuesday. During their arrival last week, the CDC assured they offer no risk to the surrounding community. "Today as we took off our masks and were given the clean bill of health, we all realized we had gone through this experience together, and we made good friends".
