Iran's Rouhani vows U.S. pressure will not force his country into talks

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ruled out any likelihood of talks with the USA unless Washington lifts its "maximum pressure" policy, adding that peace in the Middle East and the Gulf is unimaginable without Tehran's help.

Rouhani said Iran will not negotiate with Washington under the current situation - making it clear he wants usa sanctions removed before any talks.

"I think the Americans aren't after war since they know what harm it could do them", the Iranian leader said.

"America's "maximum pressure" towards Iran is doomed to failure", Rouhani said, referring to Trump's Iran strategy.

"We will never sit at the negotiating table with a weak position", Rouhani said.

The measure, which headed to the House, reflected lawmakers' concerns that USA tensions with Iran could escalate into a full-fledged war.

In May 2018 Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, then reinstated severe economic sanctions under a "maximum pressure" campaign to force Iran to renegotiate the pact.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani whispers with an unidentified official during a press conference in Tehran, Iran. Iran responded with airstrikes on Iraqi bases housing US troops which left more than 100 of those soldiers with brain injuries.

The so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action saw previous global sanctions lifted from Iran in return for it agreeing to curb its nuclear program to limit it from being able to produce weapons.

Trump administration wants a new deal that further curbs Iran's nuclear programme, ends its ballistic missile programme and its involvement in decades of proxy wars in the Middle East. Iran responded by backing away from the deal and saying it is no longer bound by the limits on uranium enrichment spelled out in the agreement.

"Securing peace and stability in the sensitive region of the Middle East and in the Persian Gulf is impossible without Iran's help", he said.

Iran has said it is only prepared to open talks on the deal if the U.S. first removes its sanctions.
