Glitch delays COVID-19 tests for states as first evacuees cleared

Amid the Novel coronavirus outbreak that's infected 13 persons in the United States thus far comes the alarming news some of the testing kits that identify this highly-contagious disease can't do the job.

A fifteenth American has coronavirus, U.S. officials announced Thursday.

A second case of novel coronavirus has been confirmed in the U.S. among evacuees from China, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday.

CDC's director of the Center for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Dr Nancy Messonnier issued a calm but stark warning.

So far, there have been just two known cases of human-to-human transmission in the United States but, after hopeful signs the outbreak might be subsiding, China Thursday reported a huge surge of more than 14,000 new cases.

It said the kits will supposedly enable states to conduct their own testing for Covid-19 and get results faster than they would by shipping samples to the its headquarters in Atlanta.

The patient is among a group of people under a federal quarantine order due to their recent return to the US on a State Department-chartered flight that arrived on February 7, 2020.

'At some point, we're likely to see community spread in the U.S., ' she said during a press briefing.

So far, the CDC hasn't been invited to be part of an global joint mission to China, she said, though it stands ready to participate if asked.

The US Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS's) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) will expand an existing partnership with New Jersey-based Janssen Research & Development, part of Johnson & Johnson, HHS said yesterday in a news release.

The CDC on Tuesday released 195 people from quarantine at March Air Reserve Base in California after holding them there for 14 days. It has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization but has only been the subject of 12 confirmed USA cases, while more than 300 tests here have been negative. The two arrived at Miramar on different planes and were housed in separate facilities on base. " Can and should be prepared for this new virus to take a foothold in the USA", she told reporters on the call.

'Since airport screening began in mid-January we have screened more than 30,000 passengers.

Officials are seeing "fewer and fewer travelers from China, especially from Hubei province", which includes Wuhan, Messonnier said.
