Ericsson to skip mobile trade show over coronavirus

MWC one of the biggest technology shows of the year takes place in Barcelona

After an extensive internal risk assessment, Ericsson has made a decision to take further precautionary measures by withdrawing from MWC Barcelona 2020, the largest event in the telecom industry. The company said in a press conference release earlier today that everything planned for the event would instead be shown at local "Ericsson Unboxed" events. CEO Borje Ekholm said the decision was not taken lightly, but health and safety needed to be the highest priority. "We regret not attending, but believe this is the right decision", it added. We hope to show our latest innovations at the MWC in Barcelona.

It also announced measures to help prevent the spread of the virus across the event's three main venues, including changing microphones between speakers and advising all attendees to adopt a "no-handshake policy". Ericsson is one of the leading telecom companies that participates in MWC at a significant scale.

"MWC Barcelona is one of the world's most important technology conferences".

The virus was first detected in Wuhan, China back in December but it has quickly spread to other regions.

The list of organizations passing on MWC under the current circumstances now includes NIVIDIA along with Ericsson and LG.

Nvidia was a major sponsor of the meeting, and also had actually partnered with the GSMA meeting arranging body to organize a whole track of 10 sessions and also roundtables around expert system, The Verge reported on Friday.

Chinese-based ZTE has chose to cancel its Devices Press conference scheduled on February 25, although it is still planning on attending the event.

Swedish telecommunications equipment provider Ericsson said on Friday it would skip a major trade show because of the risk of spreading the coronavirus. The MWC event, which is scheduled to take place from 24 to 27 February, will be held in Barcelona, Spain.

It also added that following the outbreak and continued spreading of the novel corona virus, the company closely monitored the development and adhered to recommendations from relevant national authorities and global bodies.

"The cancellation of Ericsson will now have some impact on our presence and may have further impact", the group said.

With the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus showing no signs of slowing down, LG Electronics has chose to withdraw its participation from the MWC 2020.
