DHHR Confirms: W.Va. Child Died Of The Flu

Ruby Hospital in Morgantown

According to a report from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), hospitals across the state reported more than 1,300 positive influenza tests last week.

For the last reporting week released, there were no cases of H3N2 reported - only the third week this flu season that has been the case.

The person from Maine who was tested for the novel coronavirus has tested negative, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"This makes a total of two [deaths] we've had this year". No cases of the Coronavirus have been reported in the state.

"In some populations, it can be quite serious, especially in younger children, people over 65 and pregnant women or anyone with a compromised immune system", said Gerrard. Across the country, the CDC estimates 16,000 Americans have died from the flu, including 78 children.

Haupt also warns that flu-related hospitalizations are going up quickly, including many people from ages 18 to 49, which is unusual.

As of Wednesday there are more than 45,000 reported cases of Coronavirus around the world and more than 1,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

Health care professionals say the best way to prevent the flu is to wash your hands, wear a mask and get your flu shot. But that means 60% aren't vaccinated for the flu. "But as far as my daughter, she has a lot of health problems, so her doctor thinks it's best for her to get the vaccine", Patterson said. The vaccine is safe and in adequate supply. And he expects that will be followed by many more weeks of high flu activity.

Haupt says it could be several weeks before the peak of the flu season hits.

"If there's persistent fever or flu symptoms that last over 24 to 48 hours, they (students) should head down to the clinic", Chirico said. All 14 other state residents tested for the virus have been cleared.

Mr Ryan declined to say whether experts from the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) would be part of the mission or to give details on members or nationalities.

He said: "We basically have a strategy which depends upon four tactical aims: the first one is to contain; the second of these is to delay; the third of these is to do the science and the research, and the fourth is to mitigate so we can brace the NHS". He hopes the new kits will be in Wisconsin next week.
