Coronavirus: Beijing orders 14-day quarantine for returnees

Authorities said 1,716 medical workers have been infected during the outbreak, with six dying from the illness.

The Chinese National Health Commission said that it had recorded 121 new deaths and 5,090 new coronavirus cases in China on Thursday, taking the total number of infected to 63,851.

A top Chinese official, in an interview with Reuters, acknowledged that the coronavirus was a huge challenge, but defended the government's management of the epidemic and lashed out at the "overreaction" of some countries.

"Particular attention will be paid to understanding the transmission of the virus, the severity of the disease and the impact of ongoing response measures", WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.

"As of midnight on February 14 [16:00 GMT Thursday], the National Health Commission received information about 66,492 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by a new type of coronavirus from 31 provinces [regions and municipalities], including 56,873 now ill people".

Xu Yahua, an official from China's transport ministry, said the government expects 160 million people to start returning to their cities of residence next week.

Those who don't comply could face legal action, the notice said.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen met the hundreds of passengers of the Westerdam on his country's southern coast, personally handing them flowers after they were not allowed to dock in Japan, Guam, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines. Hun Sen said all of the almost 1,500 passengers will be allowed to disembark after no cases were found aboard.


On Friday, the Chinese government had highlighted the continued drop of coronavirus disease, officially termed by the World Health Organization as COVID-19, all over the country except in Hubei province.

The US State Department said it was "deeply concerned" about the vulnerability of China's northern neighbor, North Korea, and offered to support aid work in the country. The outbreak is also wreaking havoc on regional sporting events.

But Yoshiro Mori, president of the organizing committee of this year's Tokyo Olympics, told reporters Thursday the committee is not considering postponing or canceling the Games, which begin in July.

The death toll from the coronavirus is higher than the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2002-03, which is believed to have killed 774 people and sickened almost 8,100 in China and Hong Kong.
