China reports 5090 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, 121 new deaths

MWC2020 in Barcelone was cancelled on Wednesday amid coronavirus fears

On Friday, Hubei's health commission said another 116 people had died and more than 4,800 new cases were reported.

This brings the total number of infections on board the Diamond Princess to 218, which is the highest number of infections in one location outside of China.

Some 55,748 people are now undergoing treatment, while 1,380 people have died of the flu-like virus that emerged in Hubei province's capital, Wuhan, in December.

The National Health Commission reported five other deaths and 217 new cases elsewhere in China, as the number of new patients outside Hubei fell for a 10th straight day.

The province, the epicentre of the outbreak, had 242 more deaths and over 14,800 new cases on Thursday.

The sharp increases came after Hubei authorities said they had introduced using a new, quicker diagnostic method using computerized tomography (CT) scans, which health authorities said had diagnosed 13,332 of the new infections.

People inside China and around the world have raised questions about the initial response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Japan reported its first death Thursday.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Beijing has had an "open and transparent attitude" with the global community since the start of the epidemic. Provincial authorities said there are about 37,000 patients in hospital, 1,685 of whom are in critical condition. Hong Kong and the Philippines have each reported one.

The MS Westerdam, carrying 1,455 passengers and 802 crew, docked in the Cambodian port town of Sihanoukville on Thursday.

"My wife and I gave him some chocolates as a show of our appreciation", Lou Poandel, a tourist from New Jersey, told Reuters after meeting the Cambodian leader.

China will grow at its slowest rate since the global financial crisis this quarter, according to a Reuters poll of economists who said the downturn would be short-lived if the outbreak was contained. The student, a man in his 20s, remains isolated in his off-campus housing and is being monitored by public health nurses, according to officials.

China's Hubei province reported 4,823 additional coronavirus cases, confirming that the almost 15,000 reported a day earlier was a one-off situation due to a new method for counting infections.

Economists are assessing the impact of the outbreak on the world's second-largest economy and scaling back their expectations for growth this year.
