Africa confirms first case of coronavirus

Egypt confirms first coronavirus case

In a statement, Egyptian health ministry said it had informed the World Health Organisation and had taken all necessary preventative measures.

Representative of the World Health Organization in Egypt, John Gabor praised Egypt's transparency dealing with the situation, and "its keenness to inform WHO of the case as soon as it was discovered".

WHO Egypt confirmed the news on its Twitter.

World Health Organization reports indicates, 42,708 confirmed cases reported in China, and have now surpassed 1000 deaths - 1017 people in China have lost their lives to this virus.

Deep trade links with China and often overstretched healthcare systems have raised concerns about the capacity of African countries to respond to an outbreak.

The death toll from China's virus epidemic neared 1,400 on Friday with six medical workers among the victims, underscoring the country's struggle to contain a deepening health crisis. Over 64,000 cases have been diagnosed globally. And China's National Health Commission earlier this week named the pneumonia caused by the virus as "novel coronavirus pneumonia" or NCP.

"The main outcome we expect from this meeting is not immediate answers to every question", Tedros said.

The move significantly expands the government's response to the outbreak and comes as a particularly harsh wave of influenza is hitting the country.

Health authorities say it can be hard to distinguish between the two illnesses.

To date there have been 15 confirmed cases in the United States, and no confirmed cases in OH.

Authorities have placed some 56 million people in Hubei under quarantine since late last month, in an unprecedented effort to stop the new coronavirus from spreading.

Dr. Sylvie Briand, WHO director of global infectious hazard preparedness, said such infections were not unusual in outbreaks but that it was seeking more details from Chinese authorities.
