Vermont state bill would ban cell phone use for those under 21

A proposed bill in the Vermont Senate would ban people under 21 years old from using cellphones.

The bill, introduced Thursday by Sen.

On Tuesday (7th January 2020), the State of Vermont introduced a bill by Democratic Senator, John Rodgers, which sought to prohibit cell phone usage by age.

The bill also mentions that cell phones have often been used by mass shooters to research previous shootings.

But Rodgers doesn't expect the proposal will become law, he told The Barre Montpelier Times Argus.

It proposes a year in jail or a fine of no more than $1,000 for a violation.

"In light of the risky and life-threatening consequences of cell phone use by young people, it is clear that persons under 21 years of age are not developmentally mature enough to safely possess them, just as the General Assembly has concluded that persons under 21 years of age are not mature enough to possess firearms, smoke cigarettes, or consume alcohol", the proposal reads.

"I have no delusions that it's going to pass".

The bill says such a ban would be justified because the "General Assembly has concluded that persons under 21 years of age are not mature enough to possess firearms, smoke cigarettes or consume alcohol", according to WPTZ.

The bill illustrates how cellphones can be dangerously used, including in fatal distracted-driving vehicle crashes and through online bullying that can lead to suicides among adolescents, according to the filing.

According to the newspaper, Rodgers says he is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and the state legislature is trying to take away those rights by increasing the legal age.
