The new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is now available

Microsoft Edge browser based on Google's Chrome comes to macOS

Microsoft, though, is hoping that it can make up some lost ground with the recent release of a completely redesigned Microsoft Edge which - we should point out - is based on Chromium, the same open-source code base Google Chrome is built on.

Edge first debuted with Windows 10 several years ago, but hasn't found a big audience.

The browser is available in 90 languages and Microsoft updated the mobile versions of Edge with new icons to match those of the new browser.

Microsoft is trying to breathe a new life into its web browser by ditching the homegrown browser engine in favor of Chromium.

Technically this is the 79th stable version of Edge, with Edge 80 set to land in February and regular updates arriving every six weeks from then on. That's the beauty of using Chromium, the most widely-used web browsing engine in the world. It will be "offered to additional devices as data and feedback indicate that users are having a good experience", Microsoft said. There's also an Internet Explorer mode for some reason, and a lot of other Microsoft-y things like Active Directory support you'd expect from an app that might go into corporate environments. While there have been stable releases before, all of these were not officially released by Microsoft. You can download the browser from the link embedded below.

While it may be tempting to switch to the new Edge right away, users need to be aware that core features are not available yet. The Chromium foundation, however, gives Edge access both to Microsoft's list of curated plugins as well as the vast array of extensions available via Google's Chrome Web Store, which offers far more flexibility than the old Edge ever did. If you're exhausted of Chrome or are simply looking for something a little bit different, Edge might be exactly what you need.
