The 2020 Honda Civic Type R has been unveiled at the Tokyo show. Following the sporty Si models and the entry-level Civic Hatchback, the fearsome Civic Type R receives a few updates of its own. More than anything, the bigger grille served to further tidy up the busy front end while feeding more cooling air during spirited driving. This variant incorporates numerous changes including a new two-piece brake rotors and new brake pads created to reduce fade and improve high-speed braking efficiency.

There are changes underneath as well, with the Type R's suspension being retuned for enhanced ride comfort, reduced friction and improved steering feedback. Taking feedback from real WRC experiences, Toyota Gazoo Racing built the GR Yaris from scratch to achieve a high-rigidity body of highly refined balance while also optimising front and rear suspension geometry. The changes include a new Alcantara-wrapped tiller, a new shifter with shorter shift throws, and a new shift knob.

Under the hood mounted 2.0-liter turbo engine capable of developing 306 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the company addressed a glaring safety issue by adding the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance technologies as standard equipment. Honda didn't say what's included, but other Civics have forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and road departure mitigation that steers the auto back into its lane if it's about to leave the road. Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, it accelerates the Civic Type R from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds.
