Shane Lowry finishes second in Hong Kong Open after strong finish

Shane Lowry's strong final round saw him claim second place at the Hong Kong Open

Singapore's SEA Games golf champion James Leow shot a two-over 72 at the Hong Kong Open on Saturday (Jan 11) for a 212 total. His first triumph here was in November 2017.

"The guys had to come and catch me basically".

"I have three wins on the main tours in my career and this is my first wire-to-wire".

Open champion Lowry hit five birdies and an eagle in his final round, dropping just one shot in what was the best round of day four.

"I felt like I stayed very patient and then I didn't really get rewarded", he said. I played some good golf and had a good time.

But at six points off the lead, the Irishman - who will next head to Abu Dhabi to defend his European Tour title - warned he was still in contention at Fanling.

"I'm forever refreshing my phone trying to keep touch with what's going on back there", Ormsby told the South China Morning Post.

He and US Ryder Cup player Tony Finau had teed off together on the final day six shots off Ormsby, and although Lowry improved his showing with a dazzling final round, it wasn't enough to close the significant gap.

But the world number 16 also promised to come out fighting on Sunday. "I'm going to have to shoot a number on this course but I kind of knew that was going to be the case".

The victor of the Hong Kong Open 2017 now has a two-stroke lead over Thai Gunn Charoenkul before the final day.

The soon-to-be Stanford student will fly back to the U.S. on Monday, where he is based, to get back to school.

The Hong Kong Open was scheduled to be played at the start of December, but was postponed due to the social unrest affecting the city over the attempted introduction of a controversial extradition law.
