Saracens will be relegated at end of season, Premiership Rugby confirms

Saracens In Trouble Again

Originally, it was believed that Saracens would be given until the end of the season to prove that they are complying with the salary cap for the 2019/20 season but the prospect of them breaching the cap and remaining in England's top-tier, it is believed, has not sat well with the other competing clubs in the Premiership.

The dramatic development leaves the future of some of the world's most high-profile players, like England captain Owen Farrell and worldwide teammates Maro Itoje and the Vunipola brothers, up in the air.

The defending champions have already been docked 35 points and fined 5 point 3 million pounds after they were found guilty of breaking rules over the last three campaigns.

Premiership Rugby Limited chief executives met to discuss the latest situation in London on Tuesday.

Neil Golding, chairman of Saracens, said: "As the new Chairman of Saracens I acknowledge the club has made errors in the past and we unreservedly apologise for those mistakes".

Few clubs inspire such loyalty as Saracens but it is nearly unthinkable for any of their England internationals to remain at the club playing second-tier Championship rugby.

However, Saracens are on course to be over the £7m ceiling again this season, with Premiership Rugby now deciding to relegate the side. "So it was their choice not to open up their books", Rowe told the BBC.

"We hope that we can now start to move forward, begin to restore confidence and over time, rebuild trust with PRL, its stakeholders and the wider rugby community". They have cheated. And I'm just a bit upset it has taken so long to do this.

They could also still progress to the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup should they beat Racing 92 at home on Sunday.

It throws up huge doubts over the future of some of the Premiership's biggest names, who have all tasted success with Saracens over the club's recent period of dominance - including a domestic and European double last term.
