Russell banished from Scotland's Six Nations squad after breaching team rules

Finn Russell

Finn Russell has left Scotland's training camp before the Six Nations after being disciplined for "a violation of the team's protocol".

Finn Russell has been axed by Scotland ahead of their Six Nations opener against Ireland on February 1 due to disciplinary reasons.

The BBC said it understood Russell, who plays for French side Racing 92, had left the training camp in Edinburgh of his own accord.

The in-form Adam Hastings is now nearly certain to wear the number 10 jersey in Dublin but Townsend may look for reinforcements with no other regular stand-offs in his squad.

Gregor Townsend's men are now in a team camp in Edinburgh as preparations continue for the clash in the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, February 1.

In May 2017, Russell's father Keith was sacked from his role as director of domestic rugby at the SRU, and the following summer won an unfair dismissal claim against the union, in which the judge's ruling was scathing of chief executive Mark Dodson.

It's undoubtedly a massive blow to Scotland's Six Nations hopes just nine days before they kick off their campaign against Ireland in Dublin.

"I actually had an argument with Gregor [at half-time]", Russell told ITV after the game.

The 27-year-old played at Glasgow Warriors from 2012 to 2018 before landing his move to France.
