Oscars 2020: Nominations announcement under way

Disney Box Office Lionsgate STX Entertainment

After a break, the remainder of the categories will be announced at 5:30 PM PT (in no particular order): Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Animated Feature Film, Cinematography, Directing, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Song, Best Picture, Production Design, Visual Effects, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay.

The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time.in Hollywood follow with 10 nominations each.

Either way, Joker has made Oscar history, topping The Dark Knight as the most-nominated superhero movie ever. The 50-year-old Hustlers star made an appearance at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards on January 12 to accept the prize for best supporting actress, and her darling Elie Saab gown certainly made an impression.

It's been a tough awards season for Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez. That means that all narrative features directed by women combined got three fewer nominations than Joker, a film specifically about a cis white straight man feeling disaffected by society (which ultimately results in violence we are made to cheer for).

In an industry criticized for its lack of diversity, the Oscars picked only one non-white acting nominee - British star Cynthia Erivo, who plays USA anti-slavery icon Harriet Tubman in "Harriet".

This year, the Oscars failed to address their diversity problem yet again, shutting out women from its directing category and people of colour from nearly every category in the slate of nominees that were announced yesterday. Monday's plethora of nominations "matters" for the industry as it further validates the Netflix business model.

Meanwhile, Robert De Niro was the biggest star overlooked in the best actor category for "The Irishman", although Martin Scorsese's director nod makes him the living director with the most Oscar nominations, with nine.

Cate Blanchett, 50, also missed out on Oscars recognition, after being previously nominated in the "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy" category at the Golden Globes for film, Where'd You Go, Bernadette.

"It's the kind of story we don't see often enough and it's exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve", tweeted former president Barack Obama, adding he was "glad" to see the nomination.

The Oscars will be handed out in Hollywood on February 9.
