Masvaure half cenury helps Zimbabwe to solid start against Sri Lanka

Zimbabwe made sedate progress and reached lunch at 62 without loss against Sri Lanka after winning the toss in Harare on Sunday in their first home Test since 2017.

Masvaure was the first wicket to fall when he was caught by a diving Dimuth Karunaratne at mid-off from the left-arm spin of Lasith Embuldeniya.

Kasuza, one of three Zimbabwe players handed their Test debut, survived a dropped chance off a miscued hook shot before bringing up his own half-century.

Craig Ervine fell short of a third Test century but his crafted 85, assisted by some gutsy batting from the lower order, took Zimbabwe to 349 for nine at tea on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Harare on Monday. The left-hander Ervine accelerated slightly on the way to 55 without failing through stumps and hit three sixes way.

Ervine was undefeated with Brendan Taylor (13) at the end of the day.

The Test is Zimbabwe's first since November 2018, when they drew a series 1-1 in Bangladesh, and despite a slow run-rate they laid a platform for a big score. Fast bowler Suranga Lakmal returned for Sri Lanka, having missed the entire Pakistan series, while Angelo Mathews was also included in an experienced side.

Zimbabwe is making a comeback into Test cricket after a suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over its administration of the sport that had been embroiled in politics.

Zimbabwe last played a Test in the home contrary to the West Indies in October 2017.
