Man United agree to terms with Fernandes negotiating with Sporting

He is expected to be in the crowd when United face fierce rivals of their own on Sunday afternoon in the form of Liverpool.

Fernandes is more of an attack-minded player more suitable for the number 10 position and it won't be surprising if the club are after both the Portuguese and Llorente.

"The only certainty I have is that Bruno will play [in the derby]", said the Sporting boss at his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

'We prepared the game with Bruno and he trained very well, as always.

"He is an extraordinary player, the best and most valuable in the league, as he was last season", he added.

"I've heard some people talk about money".

"When we have such an athlete it is normal for a lot of teams to want it, but I think tomorrow will be there unless disaster strikes".

United and Sporting still need to agree a fee for the player, with Jorge Mendes set to present a proposal to after he attended United's FA Cup clash with Wolves on Wednesday night.

It is also understood that United will be offering £50m plus £10m in add-ons to sign Fernandes in the January window, and this could be enough to push through his move.

Fernandes has agreed personal terms with United but the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement for the Sporting captain to move to Old Trafford.

Sporting's preference was to borrow Andreas Pereira for the rest of the season, but he is deemed as a valuable member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.

Ed Woodward, United's executive vice-chairman, held discussions with Sporting president Frederico Varandas last Friday at the club's Mayfair offices, before negotiations continued this week.

United are definitely restricted with their midfield options after the injuries for Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay and they are now with just two senior choices in Fred and Nemanja Matic.

As a result, United seem to be exploring the prospect of a loan deal for the £18m-rated midfielder and it remains to be seen whether they are able to convince Atleti regarding the same.
