'Little Women' Cast Reacts To Greta Gerwig's Best Director Snub

Saoirse Ronan- A fourth Oscar nomination

The actress announced this year's nominees alongside John Cho, and after the Best Director category was revealed, she shadily said to the camera, "Congratulations to those men".

Rae, star of HBO's Insecure, is a writer, director, producer and actress.

It wouldn't be the Oscars if it didn't piss everyone off, and as expected, this year's slate was largely non-inclusive - that is to say, white and male where it matters most - ensuring that AMPAS' measures to diversify their voting body hasn't really done much good, yet at least.

In addition to Gerwig, filmmaker Lulu Wang, the director of The Farewell, had been considered to be a contender. Some potential nominees included Greta Gerwig for Little Women and Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers. Ever Academy Award nomination list has its set of snubs, and Little Women director Greta Gerwig was one.

"That's literally what Little Women is about", Pugh continued, "so [this] only underlines how important it is - because it's happening".

Ronan has previously been nominated for three Oscars; for best actress for Lady Bird (2017) and Brooklyn (2015), and best supporting actress for her performance in Atonement (2007) when she was just 13 years old. "She made a film about women working and their relationship with money and their relationship with working in a man's world".

Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) have also been nominated for best director.

Johansson is hardly the first actor to be recognized in dual acting categories in a single year, though the double nomination in that field hasn't occurred since Cate Blanchett was recognized for the 2007 films "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and "I'm Not There".

The Academy Awards has a long and rich tradition of not recognizing female directors.

Even after the snub, "Little Women" has received nods in six different categories, including Best Picture, Costume Design and Original Score.

Prior to the Academy Award nominations, Greta Gerwig was similarly snubbed at the Golden Globes.

For her part, Gerwig has responded to her nominations (and lack thereof) with admirable grace.

1917's 10 nods include best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best achievement in visual effects and best achievement in sound editing.

At the 49th Academy Awards, the Italian screenwriter and director made history by being the first female to be nominated in almost half a century. Ironically, too, the Academy's oversight actually reaffirms the incredible relevance of Gerwig's film. "She is the most brilliant creative talent working in our industry today, and we are thrilled that she and our handsome film have been recognised".
