Larry Fitzgerald returning for Year 17

Larry Fitzgerald returning for Year 17

One of the most productive wide receivers in National Football League history isn't done yet, returning for his 17th season with the franchise that drafted him in 2004.

"Arizona is where I started and where I will finish".

After some speculation that the popular 36-year-old Fitzgerald might finally retire, the team announced Wednesday he has signed a one-year contact that will keep him in the desert through 2020. The hiring of Kliff Kingsbury as head coach and the upside on first-overall pick Kyler Murray make for a tantalizing reason for Fitzgerald to return in 2020, and so he shall.

Fitzgerald, who started all 16 games for the Cardinals last season, led the team in receiving yards (804) and touchdowns (4). The Cardinals had a 5-10-1 record past year, which was last in the NFC West.

This is Fitzgerald's 16th season with the team.

The future Hall of Famer is the NFL's active leader in career receptions (1,378), receiving yards (17,083), and touchdowns (120).

During his historic career, Fitzgerald has played in 250 games.

He now ranks second all-time in career receptions, trailing Jerry Rice by 171 catches, and second all-time in receiving yards, trailing Rice by 5,812 yards.

The 11-time Pro Bowl selection, 2008 All-Pro and 2016 Walter Payton Man of the Year award victor has played his entire career in Arizona since he was selected No. 3 overall out of Pittsburgh in the 2004 NFL Draft.

"I think he's playing as good as anybody, honestly", he said of the 11-time Pro Bowl wideout.
