Kentucky Police arrest GM engineers street racing C8 Chevy Corvettes

Two Chevrolet Corvette C8 engineering test cars impounded, drivers arrested for street racing

27-year-old Alexander Thim, of West Bloomfield, Mich., and 30-year-old Mark Derkatz, of Windsor, Ontario, were stopped by Kentucky State Police and arrested on charges of racing a motor vehicle on a public highway, reckless driving and speeding 26 miles per hour over the speed limit or greater.

The two Corvettes accused of street racing were towed away following the incident last Wednesday night (8 January 2020) and reportedly recovered by General Motors the next day. Derkatz, traveling in a white Corvette, achieved a speed of 100 mph in the 45 mph zone, while Thim, traveling in a red Corvette, achieved a top speed of 120 mph in the 45 mph zone, according to the citations.

Both men were released on bond and face charges for racing, reckless driving and speeding. Kentucky State Police spotted the pair of Corvettes and proceeded to pull the duo over before making the arrest.

It said Bowling Green Assembly is the only location that builds the model of vehicle its employees had taken for a joyride. General Motors says the assembly plant there is the only place in the world where Corvettes are built.

A statement from General Motors to U.S. media outlet Automobile said: "We are aware of an incident involving our test vehicles and are now investigating".

"Safety remains our overriding priority at General Motors", the spokesperson said. "We have no further comment at this time", GM told Automobile.

Alexander Thim, 27, and Mark Derkatz, 30, were stopped by police while racing the luxury cars down a Kentucky road.

Automobile claims one driver is a CAE engineer specializing in induction and exhaust setups, and the other an electrical engineer.

Mark Reuss, president of General Motors Company, shows off the 2020 Chevy Corvette Stingray at a press conference in July 2019.
