7th US Democratic debate: Iraq, trade, a female president

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders

In the statement, she said: "Among the topics that came up was what would happen if Democrats nominated a female candidate". But after the debate was over, Warren, a MA senator, approached Sanders, who held out his hand to make it tremble.

"I beat an incumbent Republican Congressman", Sanders said.

Bernard Sanders escalated after Tuesday night's debate with her accusing him of calling her "a liar on national TV".

That exchange only lasted a few minutes but after the debate was over, Warren, a 70-year-old MA senator, approached Sanders, who put out his hand for her to shake. "Sanders told you a woman could not win the election?" she asked Warren, as the audience and Sanders laughed.

On Wednesday, CNN released the audio from the two candidates' microphones.

I think you called me a liar on national TV'.

Tuesday's debate, the final one before the Iowa caucuses next month, deepened the schism between two over a report that Sanders told Warren during a private meeting in 2018 that he did not think a woman could win the 2020 election.

Sanders: "You called me a liar". "I didn't say it", Sanders responded. "You want to have that discussion, we'll have that discussion".

"Anytime", Warren replied. Sanders started to say, "you called me a." and then turned and walked away from her.

Much to Twitter's delight, the audio from that awkward confrontation between presidential candidates and friends Elizabeth Warren, 70, and Bernie Sanders, 78, after the January 14 debate in Des Moines finally aired on CNN.

But those buddy-buddy feelings quickly dissipated after Sanders flat-out denied both the report and Warren's statement. "I just want to say, 'Hi Bernie'". "Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by three million votes, how could anybody in a million years not believe that a woman could become president of the United States?" he said. "I am not here to try to fight with Bernie", she said.

'The best way to talk about who can win is by looking at people's winning record.

Senator Amy Klobuchar jumped in to echo Warren's point, adding that two of the Democrats who ousted Republicans from crucial statewide governorships were women, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of MI and Gov. Laura Kelly of Kansas. The only people on this stage who have won every single election that they've been in are the women.

President Donald Trump's support in Wisconsin shows little signs of change in the latest Marquette University Law School poll. Look at the men on this stage.

"No one is going to trash Elizabeth Warren", he added.

The confrontation marks a notable shift in the conduct of the two strong progressives candidates who have steadfastly refused to attack each other for more than a year on the campaign trail.
